Snapshots taken in a moment
Close your eyes and breathe the air.
Memories made throughout our lives
but do we understand or care?
Time goes on and memories fade
more like photographs than dreams.
They dull and crack, the edges frayed
exposed to daily life's extremes.
So now when memories come my way
I fold them tight and hold them near.
A photo album in my mind
remembered joys, and pains and tears...

Just To Hear You Breathe
::[Just To Hear You Breathe]::
I lay awake and watch the sunset
Listen to the sounds of the day
slowly wind down as everything in nature
glances skyward, gives a little stretch
*yawn* and heads for bed.
Slowly rolling over
I study your smiling face.
Even when you sleep you still have
that cute little half grin I love so much.
In that half a moment when the last of the sun
retreats to that land over the hills
everything falls silent.
For half a moment.
Changing of the guards
whatever you want to call it
but between the day sounds and night sounds
when it is neither one nor the other
daytime breathes its final breath
and nightime takes in its first.
In that moment your eyes seem a little greener
Your hair a little softer
Your skin a little purer
Your laugh a little more infectious...
I lean a little closer, just like I do every night
Our little secret you don't know about.
Day and night seem to stop
just for you and me in that moment.
I would go sleepless for days on end
Call you halfway
Battlefield of the Mind
at the edge of my mind...
(Let me in)
Slightly louder now
demanding to be heard...
To be seen
To be touched
To be embraced
(You can't resist me)
I shiver in the dark
(I'm coming to eat your mind)
Banging now, getting louder
but the door holds
(This is my world, my gameboard
And you are my pawn...)
(Drink your mind)
(Feed on your soul)
(Infest your dreams)
(Plant MY thoughts in your mind)
(Fruit to be reaped later...)
(Food to be enjoyed slowly)
Forced to listen to these
whispers in the dark
The pounding (eventually) stops.
My breathing slows
Hope (slowly) returns.
(I will always be here)
(Out of sight, but always within reach)
And I smile as I stand
-"Oh grave where is your victory,
death where is your sting?"-
Funny....everything's quiet now.
Now what do you know about that?
Kiss The Night
On my back in the field late into the night.
Staring up at the stars and letting the sounds
of the night embrace my shivering frame.
The stars look exactly like fireflies
trapped in the black expanse of the sky.
Stretching as far as the eyes can see.
Each trying to wiggle free of its prison.
Each calling to me to free them from their inky cell,
each silently whispering
in my ears
in my mind
in my heart...
I gently stretch my hands toward the distant light.
And for a brief second I feel my hand
close around that twinkling firefly
and I know the only thing it wants is to finally sleep.

I slowly bend to kiss the star that found its way
into my dreams and filled my heart with purpose.
As my lips touch (impossibly), I hear "Thank You"
almost a mental sigh as the light goes out.
So night after night, one by one
I reach, then dream, then smile and sigh
as each light goes out I know dreams come t
We All Play The Fool
The curtain slowly rises
You feel slightly self conscious
as the spotlight nearly blinds you.
You look left
*gulp* Here goes
A little jerky at first
then it gets easier as you
pour your entire identity
into your work
Your purpose for breathing
Faster, faster, faster still.
Your chest swells with pride
as you imagine the looks of awe
on everyone's face as they admire
what you are creating before their eyes.
Your work finally done
you collapse on the floor
and a sigh of relief escapes your lips.
Close your eyes oh so tight and wait
for the applause
for the acceptance
for that nod of approval.
Seconds feel like hours
Hours like days
Days like years
Years like lifetimes
All in the blink of an eye.
You remain motionless
for at least a decade (or so it seems)
Be patient, surely they will see
all the hard work...
Curiosity overwhelms you
and as you glance up
to see an auditorium of dust covered seats
and cupholders ful
Silent stalkers in the corners
of the mind of every man.
Always watching, always waiting
beckoning with withered hands.
Through the ages man has feared them
but found no hiding place it seems.
For even now you hear the echoes
of footsteps chased through evil dreams.
Down through tunnels formed by teardrops
raining down from countless eyes.
Taste the salt and feel the wind
made from victim's tortured cries.
Dragons, ogres, orcs and demons
all are spawned from childhood fears
Giving substance to the nightmare
we drown ourselves in seas of tears.
Listen to your soul and hear it
the sound that's been there all along
And as you shiver in the darkness
you hear the faceless Shadow's Song.
I Hear You Sing Along
I finish yet another day
I spend another night alone
I hope, then dream, then kneel to pray
That God would show me who's the One.
I glimpse you in my dreams at night
I smell your perfume on the breeze
I stumble toward your guiding light
As inwardly I always grieve.
I know I'll meet you someday soon
My heartbeat sings a longing song
And know that somewhere in this world
I hear you gently hum along.

In the shadows of the mind
our memories breathing in and out.
Like pictures taken of the past
that fade as time marches on.
One day they seem so clear
and the next they are a memory of a memory
or something like that...
Important thing forgotten
Places, People, Things.
Who was that person on the street?
Where did I leave my keys?
Where did I get my first kiss?
And meaningless things
seared into our memories forever...
The smell of the gas station attendant's aftershave.
The value of pi to the tenth digit.
How many sheep were in the Christmas play.
Memories are born and die
in a never ending circle...
As one memory breathes its first breath
another exhales its last.
Life and death, New and old
Always present in the back of your mind
Never totally recalled when we need it
but never completely forgotten.
Much the same as us in someone else's life.
Only just a little different...

Disappear from all perception
draw within myself each day.
Bitterness to those around me
the sunset fades from red to gray.
Trusting only in myself
I push away the life I knew.
And taste what I can never have
and long for someone just like you.
To treat me like I am a someone
and trust the path that I have chose.
But I have noone else like you
so daily now I self-implode.
Drawing deep within myself
far from other's hateful glares.
I place my dreams on dusty shelves
and fade from other's mocking stares.
So sure that they know for me whats best
they plug their ears to mournful cries.
I pull my hair and beat my chest
as tears are pulled in hollow eyes.
Sitting in my silent prison
I built alone, I start to cry
I watch the sunset fade away
and inwardly I start to die.
